From November to April, Canadian roads are salted. Your dog walks through the brine, jumps onto the back seat, and it dries into the upholstery as pale rings that vacuuming will not lift. Mud comes out. Road salt stays.

This cover puts a waterproof layer between the two. Quilted on top so slush, grit and salt stay on the surface. Waterproof-backed underneath so nothing soaks through to the bench. It hangs as a hammock across the whole back seat and fills the gap in front of it, so your dog has nowhere to slide when you brake on an icy off-ramp.

Washing and care

The cover unzips and goes in the machine on a cold cycle. Air dry it — a hot dryer damages the faux fur and the foam base. Do not bleach, do not iron.

Four numbered steps to fit the cover: fastening a buckle around a rear headrest post, clipping a snap hook to a D-ring, the front straps running to the front headrests, and the finished fit with a dog lying on it.

Installation

Fitted in four steps

1. Clip the top. Fasten the two plastic buckles around the rear headrest posts. The back panel now stands upright against the seat.

2. Clip the sides. Hook the metal snaps into the D-rings on the edge of the cover so the door flaps hang flat against the panels.

3. Anchor the front. Run the two front straps forward and buckle them around the front headrest posts. The cover now hangs as a hammock and the footwell gap is closed.

4. Let the dog in. Nothing to adjust afterwards. Four buckles and the whole thing lifts out in one piece for washing.

The problem

Salt does not brush off

Mud dries and vacuums out. De-icing brine does not. It wicks into the fibres of a fabric seat, dries as pale rings, and stays there. Your dog carries it in on every paw after every winter walk, and by March the back bench is a map of where it sat.

After the walk

Shake it out, wash it cold

Four headrest straps unclip and the whole thing lifts out in one piece. Shake the grit onto the driveway, machine wash cold, air dry. No dismantling the seat, no shampooing the upholstery in April.

Questions

Does road salt really damage a car seat?

On fabric seats it leaves pale rings that vacuuming does not lift, because the salt crystallises inside the fibres rather than sitting on them. On leather it dries the surface over repeated winters. Either way it is the part of winter that does not come out on its own.

What happens to melting snow?

It stays in the quilted top. The backing underneath is waterproof, so the bench stays dry. For a very wet dog, shake the cover out before the snow melts rather than after.

Can I wash it in the middle of winter?

Yes. Machine wash cold and air dry — a hot dryer will damage the waterproof backing. Give it a full day to dry indoors; it is not a quick turnaround in February.

Does the mesh window fog up?

Mesh is open weave, so it does not hold condensation the way a solid panel would. On a cold day with a wet dog, everything in the car fogs — the window included — until the heater catches up.

Will it fit my car?

The main panel is 147 × 137 cm and straps to all four headrests. Measure the width of your back bench between the door panels and compare. It fits most sedans and SUVs; very wide three-row benches are the usual exception.

Does it stop my dog sliding when I brake?

Filling the footwell gap removes the place a dog slides into, which matters on an icy road. This is not a crash-tested restraint and we do not sell it as one — for crash protection you need a certified travel crate or a tested harness.
